A group of teaching staff at an experimental primary school in the city of Taizhou, east China's Jiangsu Province, received a commendation from the China Good People List on September 10 for their dedication to the educational cause.

Chen Jinhua, 56, is a rural teacher who has been teaching for 37 years in Hailing District of Taizhou. In 2008, under her advocacy and promotion, 36 female teachers of the school were paired with 58 so-called "left-behind" children, forming a new approach to education.

Inspired by Chen, a large number of teachers of the school have taken on responsibilities and rendered special care to disadvantaged children and families in need. They have been carrying out activities such as monthly phone calls, quarterly shopping trips and half-yearly reunions and organizing numerous community visits over the past 10 years.

Nowadays, arranging such activities have become a standard practice among teachers, who have been grouped together as a service brand of the city's educational system.

At present, the team has expanded from activities in one school to each and every school in Hailing District; and the membership has risen from 36 to 222.

Participants make full use of their spare time and holidays to visit and insist on providing material and spiritual support in addition to funding for students with various difficulties.

They also offered help in various aspects, including study, life, physical and mental and interpersonal relationships. In the past decade, nearly 1,000 students have been assisted.

Chen recently was also selected as a model teacher candidate on CCTV (China Central Television).

The team has extended their compassion and support beyond the classroom, solving problems for the left-behind children who lack family education, and has been helping with serious issues regarding health and safety.

Liu Yan, member of the Standing Committee of the Hailing District Party Committee and minister of Communications Department of Taizhou, praised them for their deeds as well as lofty spirits, which embody the spirit of the times of social development and progress, demonstrating the “beauty of human nature and highlighting their inspiring deeds."
