Federations Organize Activities, Care for Rural Left-behind Children

The All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) in May 2016 initiated a project of caring for rural left-behind children, in accordance with the Opinion on Strengthening the Work of Protecting and Caring for Rural Left-behind Children, issued by the State Council, the Chinese Government's cabinet. During the past year, women's federations, at all levels, have implemented various activities, including offering lectures to left-behind children's guardians, being loving parents to rural left-behind children, electing sunny, left-behind children and writing contests on "growing-up stories."

Ahead of International Children's Day, officials from women's federations, at all levels, cooperated with government departments and social organizations to organize various activities to care for rural left -behind children. The activities were aimed at offering family education guidance services to left-behind children's parents and guardians, and at motivating people, from all segments in society, to care for rural left-behind children.

Officials from the ACWF, the Ministry of Education, the Central Spiritual Civilization Construction Guiding Committee and five other departments in May issued the notice of celebrating international Children's Day in 2017, to ensure children enjoyed a happy and meaningful Children's Day (on June 1). In the notice, the officials of relevant departments, at all levels throughout the country, were asked to pay attention to rural left-behind children, organize various activities to assist and care for rural left-behind children, and to do more good things for rural left-behind children. The ACWF in May initiated an activity, collecting and promoting innovative cases of caring for rural left-behind children, to improve the level of care offered to rural left-behind children, and to benefit more rural left-behind children.

The Women's Federation of Henan Province cooperated with the province's committee of the communist young league and the province's education department to organize loving mothers and representatives of rural left-behind children to participate in various activities, including a painting contest, a book-reading meeting and a star-observation event.

The Women's Federation of Anhui Province cooperated with the China Reform Foundation to implement Sending Stories to Rural Areas, a project of caring for left-behind children. The federation and the foundation donated 2,000 story boxes (including a memory card that contained 1,000 children's stories) to rural left - behind children in poverty-stricken areas. Women's federations in the cities of Anhui Province, organized various activities for rural left-behind children, including lectures on mental health, visiting science and technology museums and donating books to left-behind children. The federations also provide free newspapers and magazines to left-behind children from impoverished families.

Officials from the Women's Federation of Heilongjiang Province expressed concern for left-behind children, and for children from underprivileged families in Fuyuan Ernanxi Primary School, in Huojian, a town in Wangkui, a poverty-stricken county in Heilongjiang Province. The federation donated teaching equipment, desks and chairs to the school. The Women's Federation of Mudanjiang, a city in Heilongjiang Province, organized loving mothers and entrepreneurs to donate money and books to left-behind children and migrant children, to help those children grow up in a healthy way. The Women's Federation of Daqing, a city in Heilongjiang, organized 200 left-behind children to experience how to operate robots, play chess and other items. The Women's Federation of Jixi, a city in Heilongjiang, organized women volunteers to help left- behind children grow up in a healthy way. Psychologists from the city's Parents' Free Lessons offered counseling to left-behind children. The Women's Federation of Fuyuan, a city in Heilongjiang, organized left-behind children to experience how to do t'ai-chi, write Chinese calligraphy and paint on fish skin. The Women's Federation of Hulin, a city in Heilongjiang, encouraged loving people, from all segments of society, to fulfill a wish for each left-behind child.

The Women's Federation of Hunan Province donated stationery and sports equipment, worth an estimated 50,000 yuan (US $7,463), to left-behind children in Liuyang, a city in Hunan Province. Officials from the province's women's federation expressed concern for children from impoverished families, and they organized experts from maternal and child care hospitals to treat left- behind children for free. The experts also gave lectures to left-behind children's parents and guardians on how to protect children from accidental injuries, to help rural left-behind children grow up in a healthy way.

The Women's Federation of Shandong Province organized more than 50,000 loving mothers to care for left-behind children, and to help them solve their problems. The Women's Federation of Dezhou, a city in Shandong Province, organized loving people, from all segments of society, to donate books to 4:30 p.m. schools and parents' schools in communities.

The Women's Federation of Kunming, a city in Yunnan Province, donated 1,000 children's books and 300 bags to left-behind children in two schools attended by many left-behind children. The city's women's federation fulfilled a wish for 53 left-behind children.

The Women's Federation of Sanya, a city in Hainan Province, motivated people, from all segments of society, to donate money to establish 10 children's loving libraries in mountainous areas of Sanya. The city's women's federation organized volunteers to fulfill a wish for 100 children from underprivileged families. The Women's Federation of Longhua District, in Haikou, capital of Hainan Province, organized volunteers to guide left-behind children to visit the Movie Town, in Haikou, and play games with children. The children also listened to stories about the Dragon Boat Festival, and they tasted various kinds of zongzi (a traditional Chinese food made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in flat leaves).

The Women's Federation of Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture, in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, donated more than 200 books to left-behind children and children from impoverished families in Taosubutai Village. The Women's Federation of Gongliu County, in Ili, organized left-behind children to experience life in a military camp.

The women's federations of Gansu, Guizhou and Qinghai provinces distributed brochures, on safety knowledge for children, to women's federations, at grass-roots level, in the provinces. The provinces' women's federations motivated people, through the provinces' official WeChat accounts, to fulfill a wish for left-behind children and children from underprivileged families.
