Shen Yueyue, Vice Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and President of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), delivered a speech at an international web forum to mark World Children's Day on November 19. The theme of the forum was "Children's Right to Education: Relevance, Continuity and Innovation in a Pandemic."

The forum was sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the International Public Fund Zamin, and co-sponsored by the United Nations (UN) as well as the UNICEF Representative Office in Uzbekistan.

In her speech, Shen shared the experience of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Chinese government in promoting the development of the children's cause, especially guaranteeing children to receive ceaseless education during the COVID-19 epidemic outbreak.

Shen noted that the CPC and the Chinese government have always attached great importance to the growth of children and adhered to the principle of "children first." The legal protection has been improved, the government responsibilities strengthened and special actions implemented, ensuring the basic rights of children in China given prioritized protection, their health conditions improved constantly, the education level of children in rural areas increased greatly, and disabled and disadvantaged children protected in an all-round way, Shen added.

Shen called on all countries to optimize policies and take multiple measures to ensure children's physical and mental health and their right to education; to increase investment, especially for disadvantaged groups such as girls and disabled children, to ensure that all children enjoy sustained, high-quality, fair and inclusive education; and to cope with challenges through collaboration to give every child an opportunity to create a brighter future.

Noting that China and Uzbekistan are both member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Shen said that the two countries should carry forward the Shanghai Spirit and deepen friendship and collaboration.

Shen noted that China is willing to work with people from all countries and international organizations, including Uzbekistan, to make unremitting efforts to achieve the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and make the world a better place for promoting children's healthy development.

Ziroatkhon Mirziyoyeva, First Lady of Republic of Uzbekistan, Tanzila Narbayeva, Chairwoman of the Senate of Oliy Majlis, Sherzod Asadov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Republic of Uzbekistan, and Tatyana Valovaya, Director General of the UN Office in Geneva and Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, also spoke at the forum via video link.

Nearly 200 people from UN agencies and more than 10 countries and regions, including China, Russia, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States and European Union, attended the forum.

November 20 marks World Children's Day, which was initiated by the UN with the purpose of promoting children's protection, welfare and education, improving the international consensus on children's issues, raising awareness of the rights among children around the world and enhancing children's well-being.
