CWU Leaders Attend 'Women's Media Award' Ceremony

 

UN Women China and its media partner NetEase recently awarded leading women who had made notable contributions to growing industries in China.

Fifteen awards were given out to celebrities, including Gong Linna, Wu Mochou, Ann Hui On-wah, Hui Ruoqi and Ming Xi amongst other women in various categories, such as the "Female Role Model Award," the "Female Breakthrough Award" and other awards. As for male celebrities, Wu Chun, Tengger and Guo Ke received the "Male Role Model Award."

The "Women's Media Award" began in 2011. The awards focus on female role models in every field in China. The theme of this year's "Women's Media Award," "Courage to Fight for Gender Equality," paid tribute to the brave women who are actively pushing for gender equality in all fields.

Ma Leijun, senior project officer of UN Women, Professor Liu Bohong from China Women's University, Zhang Yue, a CCTV host, Professor Yin Hong from Tsinghua University, Cai Yiping, a famous female scholar, Geng Le, the founder of Light Blue Net and Dou Jing, editor-in-chief of NetEase Women, screened an impressive list of candidates to select the final winners.

After careful consideration, the 15 awards were presented to Gong Linna, a singer who founded new Chinese art music, Hui Ruoqi, Olympic champion from the Chinese women's volleyball team, Lan Tian, a prototype of the film "Seventy-Seven Days", Yan Jinxiu, a world-class tunnel expert, Ann Hui On-wah, a famous female film director, He Qiaonü, the first Chinese female philanthropist, Wang Jinchu, a village official, Fan Yusu, a writer and Han Liping, an aerospace engineer.

Ming Xi, an international supermodel, won the annual "Female Breakthrough Award" due to her achievements in the fashion, film and television industry in 2017. Wu Mochou, on the other hand, stood out amongst 90 singers and won the "Courage to Fight" Award.

Women and men alike should work together to achieve gender equality. The "Male Model of the Year" awards were presented to Guo Ke, the director of documentary "Twenty Two," and the artist and singer Tengger. Wu Chun, a celebrity dad, won the "Male Achievement of the Year" Award due to his great balance between career and family.

The China Country Programme Manager of UN Women Julie Broussard and the Editor in Chief of NetEase Media Tian Hua gave opening speeches. Julie said, "The event is to add a voice to the media to efforts to overcome gender inequality. The media's positive portrayals of women are promoting investments with great returns for the whole of society."

Li Mingshun, secretary of China Women's University (CWU) Party Committee, participated in the event and presented awards to film director Guo Ke and aerospace engineer Han Liping.

The "Women's Media Award" aimed to promote equal opportunities for women in all sectors by honoring outstanding female role models.
