The All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) held a training session on helping females improve their ability to shake off poverty in Xichang, Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, southwest China's Sichuan Province, from June 18-21.

The four-day session aimed to lead attendees to thoroughly learn President Xi Jinping's strategic thinking on poverty alleviation; implement the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee's decision-making deployments about fighting poverty; and, further promote the implementation of poverty-alleviation actions at grassroots levels.

Meanwhile, the session was designed to closely unite women to fully play their role in "holding up half of the sky" in combating poverty and building a moderately prosperous society.

Shen Yueyue, vice-chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) and president of the ACWF, attended the opening ceremony of the session and delivered a speech.

Deng Xiaogang, vice-secretary of Sichuan Provincial CPC Committee, addressed the ceremony.

Yang Liu, member of the Secretariat of the ACWF, presided over the ceremony.

Shen's Remarks

The CPC Central Committee with Xi as its core leader has placed emphasis on tackling poverty to the prominent position of governing the country since the 18th National Congress of the CPC, Shen said.

President Xi's series of key remarks have fully deployed the mission of getting rid of poverty in the country's 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020), pointing to a clear direction and providing a fundamental path to follow.

Women's federations at all levels across the country should deeply learn and carry out the strategic thinking of Xi's poverty alleviation and development, further enhancing the so-called "Four Consciousnesses," namely consciousness of the ideology, the whole, the core and the line, Shen stated.

Meanwhile, women's federations are expected to further strengthen their responsibility and sense of urgency in combating poverty; unify the thought and the actions about decision-making and deployment of the CPC Central Committee; and, make efforts to help the Party and the government fight poverty as an important "political task".

Shen maintained that women's federations should be aware of the arduous and urgent process of helping impoverished individuals escape poverty and become prosperous by working hard to promote poverty-alleviation initiatives.

Women's federations should pay greater attention to assisting disadvantaged groups to increase their incomes by integrating various social resources under the leadership of the Party committee and the support of the government.

Shen said women's federations should turn their focus to grassroots regions through implementation of poverty-alleviation initiatives.

Publicity about role models who have shaken off poverty with their persistent endeavors should be greatly strengthened so as to inspire the general population of impoverished women to learn from them.

Poverty-alleviation methods should be constantly innovated and the number of impoverished women should be precisely measured in order to help each one in accordance with the practical conditions of the region.

More efforts should be made to enhance women's federations' various training sessions so as to improve the competence of the impoverished females to escape poverty, Shen remarked.

The leadership of the officials of the women's federations should be largely strengthened, regarding poverty alleviation concerning women.

Staff members of the women's federations should have a clear understanding of their objectives, transform their work patterns and fulfill their responsibilities in case of poverty alleviation.

The women's federations should unite and encourage women to make contributions to building an all-round, well-off society and the realization of the "Chinese Dream" of the rejuvenation of Chinese nation to welcome the 19th CPC National Congress, Shen stressed.

Deng Xiaogang, vice-secretary of Sichuan Provincial Party Committee, extended his congratulations to the opening of the training session. Deng said women and the women's federations in Sichuan have played a unique role in combating poverty in the last few years, speeding up the pace of building a well-off society.

The province will continue to make poverty alleviation a top priority in its future work, to thoroughly implement Xi's remarks in this aspect, Deng concluded.

The session was attended by nearly 100 presidents of women's federations of the poverty-stricken counties in 22 provinces, municipalities, autonomous regions from the central and western parts of the country.

Furthermore, the presidents of women's federations in Sichuan and central China's Henan Province, shared their ideas at the session. Officials from women's federations in counties such as Shitai in east China's Anhui Province, Zhenfeng in southwest China's Guizhou Province and Fengjie in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, also gave speeches at the event to share their experience.
