Vice-Chairperson of the Standing Committee of China’s National People’s Congress (NPC) and President of the All-China Women’s Federation (ACWF) Shen Yueyue held a meeting with UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka in New York on September 26.

The two sides talked about preparations for the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment: A Commitment to Action which was held the next day.

“This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the UN, the 20th anniversary of the UN 4th World Conference on Women, and an occasion to make a blueprint of the Post-2015 Development Agenda. Therefore, it is of great significance to hold such a summit during such a historic transition time and it would surely be a new milestone in the history of global women’s development,” Shen said in the meeting. She added that the attendance of Chinese President Xi Jinping amid his visit to the UN headquarters fully showed his attention and support to the cause of women’s development and gender equality, along with a demonstration of China’s accountability and commitment to the promotion of the issue.

She also conveyed her thanks to Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and UN Women for their hard work in the preparations, and extended her wishes for the success of the meeting.

Ngcuka also expressed her thanks to China for co-hosting the meeting with UN Women. She said that it was the first time that the UN had held a meeting focusing on gender equality and women’s issues which was to be attended by state-level or top government leaders. Their attendance at the meeting will further advance the cause of gender equality and leave an important mark in the history of the UN and the development of women’s affairs in the international community.

Meanwhile, Shen also held talks with secretary-general of the UN 4th World Conference on Women, Gertrude Mongella. She expressed her appreciation to Mongella for her huge contributions to the success of both the UN 4th World Conference on Women and the global women’s movement. Mongella highly praised China’s role in the meeting and said that the event would definitely exert great influence upon the promotion of gender equality and women’s empowerment.
