At the invitation of Kenya’s Devolution and Planning Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru, Vice-President and First Member of the Secretariat of the All-China Women’s Federation (ACWF) Song Xiuyan attended a meeting with ministers and other high-level officials in charge of women’s affairs from three other countries, in New York on September 27.

The meeting was arranged with officials from the countries that have previously hosted a UN-organized World Conference on Women, as China did in 1995.

During the meeting, Song, who also serves as vice-director of China’s National Working Committee on Children and Women under the State Council, met with the representatives from Kenya, Mexico and Denmark. Together, they exchanged ideas about the implementation of commitments made at the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment which was just concluded, as well as the promotion of exchange and cooperation between the four nations.

Song noted that the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment: A Commitment to Action was a successful event. The meeting created a new history in global women’s causes in terms of the officials’ prominence, coverage of the event and the practical commitments made. Song said she also expects the results of the meeting and commitments to be carried out and the promotion of gender equality and women’s empowerment to be stepped up to a new level.

Officials from the three countries extended their congratulations on the success of the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment co-hosted by UN Women and China.  They also said the meeting is a milestone in the promotion of global women’s development. All four countries need to strengthen communication and cooperation, facilitate others to implement commitments and dedicate themselves to making new contributions to the promotion of gender equality around the globe, it was agreed.

On September 28, Song also held talks with Austrian Federal Minister for Women and Civil Service Gabriele Heinisch-Hosek about the global women’s movement and bilateral ties.

Song also met with Under-Secretary-General of the UN and Executive Director of UN Women Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, and secretary-general of the UN 4th World Conference on Women, Gertrude Mongella.
