ACWF Holds Forum on Basic State Policy of Gender Equality

A forum, jointly launched by the All-China Women's Federation and the Chinese Women's Studies Society, was held to mark the 20th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women and the implementation of the basic State policy of gender equality, in Beijing on October 13-14. A forum, jointly launched by the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) and the Chinese Women's Research Society (CWRS), was held to mark the 20th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women and the implementation of the basic State policy of gender equality, in Beijing on October 13-14.

At the special moment of celebration for the historic gathering held in 1995, the forum focused on learning and implementing Chinese President Xi Jinping's speech delivered at the Global Leaders' Meeting on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment; firmly implementing the basic State policy of gender equality; and, promoting the all-round development of different women's causes.

Shen Yueyue, vice-chairperson of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC) attended and gave a speech at the event.

Shen, who also serves as president of the ACWF, pointed out that President Xi's remarks at the Global Leaders' Meeting fully embodied the great importance attached to women and their causes by the Communist Party of China and the government, as well as the responsibility that China has taken to promote gender equality across the globe. President Xi's speech is not only a significant guide to lead the innovation and development of women's causes under the new situation, it also shows the direction and puts forward the requirements for women's studies in further steps.

Shen encouraged attendees to profoundly learn and comprehend the spirit of President Xi's remarks so as to unify their thoughts and guide their work. In addition, they should implement the important spirit to promote the innovative development of women's causes, she said.

Song Xiuyan, vice-president and first member of the Secretariat of the ACWF, said she fully recognized the forum was remarkable. She expected the CWRS to further summarize the achievements at the event and absorb the constructive suggestions from the participants. At the same time, she asked them to increase publicity, promote members from all walks of life to take positive actions, and make efforts in establishing a "harmonious society" through gender equality.

Song called on the participants to combine Presidents Xi's remarks at the recent conference on mass organizations with his speech at the Global Leaders' Meeting, maintain a footing in the function of the ACWF, and draw upon their strengths to implement the basic State policy of gender equality in the whole of society. Furthermore, they could develop women's causes in China and make greater contributions to jointly pushing forward the "Four Comprehensives" national strategy, realizing the "Two 100-year Goals" and the "Chinese Dream".

At the thematic forum, seven specific areas were discussed among experts and scholars: gender equality guarantee mechanisms; women's health and education; women and the economy; women and decision-making management; women's rights and legal protection; women and the environment; and, women, marriage and family.

In addition, the forum also launched a cross-thematic seminar, which provided more opportunities for participants to review the 1995 conference, share the latest information and push forward proposals for actions.

Former president of the ACWF Peng Peiyun attended the event, and it was presided over by Song Xiuyan.
