CWU Holds Annual Track, Field Meeting

China Women's University (CWU) held its 22th track and field meeting on April 20.

Li Mingshun, secretary of CWU Party Committee, congratulated organizers on the opening of the event and greeted all athletes, referees as well as workers on behalf of the university in his address at the ceremony.

Li recalled the remarks of Chinese President Xi Jinping, also General-Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), who stressed in his keynote speech at the 19th CPC National Congress that: "We will carry out extensive Fitness-for-All programs and speed up efforts to build China into a country strong on sports."

Li added that the annual track and field meeting is an opportunity for CWU to fully demonstrate the achievements and development of its physical education program and to evaluate its students' psychological and physical qualities as well as their spiritual features.

The annual gathering is also a platform for all faculty members and students to enjoy themselves, facilitate exchanges, engage in equal competitions and display their talent, Li continued, and he extended his best wishes to all athletes for their outstanding performances.

Representatives of students and referees took an oath at the ceremony.

Meanwhile, Zheng Lei, acting director of the CWU's sports department, and Han Yan, director of the Student Affairs Office, read a separate announcement of commendation to credit outstanding students for their participation in the test of their physical qualities and running abilities respectively.

After that, faculty members and students gave a demonstration of yoga, tai chi, jazz and hip-hop dancing.

A total of 1,000 students and over 400 faculty members took part in 40 competitions such as the 100m, high jump and short put during the meeting.

In the end, faculty members from the Labor Unions of the departments of foreign languages, CPC and non-party affairs, management, logistical and national assets, modern education and technology ranked in the top five places, respectively.

In addition, student representatives from the schools of higher occupation education, children's development and education, management, northern campus, social work and computer science ranked as the top six teams amongst collective contestants.

CWU Vice-President Liu Meng said at the closing ceremony that the university had made satisfactory achievements in a number of athletic competitions and worked hard to further enrich sports and cultural lives of its faculty members and students over the past few years.

Liu also called on participants to strive for a bright future and higher achievement of the CWU in the coming years.
