A teleconference on the theme of caring for women's health kicked off on October 9 in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, aiming to implement the Party's policies and improve women's participation in poverty alleviation campaigns.

The event was co-sponsored by Heilongjiang Women's Federation (HWF) and China Life Insurance Company's Heilongjiang branch.

The 900-plus participants to the event included those from women's federations, the insurance company's city-level branch and several female representatives.

Zhu Pili, inspector from HWF, presided over the conference.

At the event, Qi Xiujuan, president and secretary of the Leading Party Group of HWF signed a project contract with Zhu Haitao, general manager of the insurance company.

The contract aims to provide reproductive health insurance for impoverished women and involves several aspects such as organizing social public welfare activities, providing training classes to improve women's skills, establishing demonstration bases for poverty alleviation, and carrying out free screenings of the "two cancers" (cervical cancer and breast cancer).

Kan Yong, deputy general manager of the company, introduced specific plans for the project and put forward six suggestions so as to develop a long-term cooperative mechanism.

In order to implement the targeted poverty alleviation plan and prevent impoverished families from returning to poverty due to the "two cancers," the insurance company launched a cancer treatment insurance campaign and donated 100,000 yuan to purchase insurance for a total of 10,000 impoverished rural women.

Harbin Women's Federation has cooperated with its local insurance company for three years, during which time the federation has carried out many health projects and a total of 58,600 people have benefitted.

Zhu suggested that the company should strengthen cooperation with other enterprises, develop insurance services and help impoverished women shake off poverty and live healthily. He also said the company would cooperate with women's federations and establish a long-term mechanism to develop the campaign.

Qi affirmed the insurance company's work in constructing a social security system, improving women's livelihoods and undertaking the enterprise's social responsibility. She said the next three years is a crucial period for fighting poverty and helping impoverished patients live healthily.

Qi put forward four requirements at the event.

First, women's federations at all levels should promote rural women's participation in poverty alleviation campaign.

Second, women cadres should pay attention to impoverished women's health conditions and take care of them carefully.

Third, the federations should strengthen cooperation with the insurance company to promote the women's health campaign so as to solve the problem of recurring poverty.

Fourth, health knowledge should be promoted among the public; women's health awareness should be strengthened; the federations should cooperate with relevant departments, social organizations and charity enterprises and set up a three-stage linkage mechanism to help more impoverished patients live a happy life.
