Inspired by President Xi Jinping's speech at the 2018 Spring Festival Gathering, Guan Ying, a researcher from Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences, recently said that family harmony is the foundation of national prosperity.
Guan said that to build family harmony, family members should live in peace, should realize balanced functions and make concerted efforts to enhance the development of the nation.
In Xi's speech, "home" and "family" are key words. It is hundred millions of happy families that lay the ground for a stronger country and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
First, the foundation of family harmony lies in the healthy and close relationship among family members.
Only if all members live in peace can a family truly prosper. Everyone in the family should learn to build harmony together. Everyone should cooperate closely, support each other, respect every idea and promote equality.
Families should share their feelings so every member can internalize virtues and values. They should learn from each other and better adapt themselves to the changes in society.
Second, family harmony exists in the balanced realization of family functions. Family is the basic unit of people's social life, playing an important role in material, physical, mental, and cultural aspects.
A lack of family functions can lead to development problems especially for children, discordant relationships, and even family crises.
To achieve and maintain harmony, build healthy personalities, family functions need to be better strengthened and balanced. Everyone should make joint efforts to run a happy family.
Third, family harmony should resonate with the development of the nation. President Xi emphasized that "individual dreams and family dreams should be combined with the Chinese Dream". This means that everyone can contribute to country's development by taking responsibility with aspects such as raising children and supporting aging parents.
Since everyone benefits from national prosperity, people also need to devote themselves to realizing the goals of the new era. All Chinese families should keep pace with change, accept new notions and put them into operation in daily life. Adults should protect children from bad influence and establish virtues.
Guan's best-known publication is Social Sciences on Family Education.
