Famous 66-year-old actress Zhu Lin recently gave an interview to promote her upcoming performance in the stage play Letter from an Unknown Woman and shared her dreams and profession.
Zhu is best known for her performance in Journey to the West as the queen of the fictional place Womanland in Western Liang, a nation populated by female citizens who believe that men are fatally deceptive in matters of the heart.
For the generation born in the 1980s and 1990s, Journey to the West is among their earliest cultural memories.
One viewer commented that, "When I was young, I used to think that among the difficulties the hero Monkey King has conquered along the journey, the Womanland was the easiest. But, as years went by, I have come to realize that it was the most heartbreaking one."
Zhu has set strict demand on herself of reading daily. She believes that a person's temperament is formed in an invisible manner, and reading can often determine this temperament.
She also thinks that reading is personalized, so readers needed to find books they like, instead of following the recommendations of celebrities.
Zhu reveals that she resolutely follows her heart. She said that, "The beautiful and gentle performance shown on the stage is fake. I can do nothing but follow my script. I don't want to be the woman in the book Letter from an Unknown Woman and die on the stage, which is not the artistic life I am pursuing. I just want to keep everything in line with my heart, and I only care about the audience who care about me."
Over the past years, Zhu has mainly been preoccupied with reading and writing, so that more people can access the classics through online video and audio programs she hosted.
