Chinese actress Guan Yue, who serves as an advocator for rights organization UN Women's HeForShe campaign, called on all men in society to take the initiative to participate in family responsibilities at a women's roundtable sub-forum, which was held during the 2017 Boao Forum for Asia, in south China's Hainan Province, on March 25.
Guan said that from actress to film producer and investor, the success in her career and studies only came about thanks to the full support of her husband, Chinese well-known actor and singer, Tong Dawei.
A Voice for Women: Men also Need to Balance Family and Career
With the theme "Women's Contributions and Development Against the Backdrop of Economic Globalization", the women's roundtable in 2017 is the first time it has been opened up to male participants, welcoming them to share their opinions on women's status of development.
Guan said that the government has made great progress in the development of Chinese women in the past few years, but there are still some problems to be solved urgently in society, including gender inequality in job opportunities and resources, capability recognition and job promotion, as well as the dilemma faced between career and family.
Guan Yue has been regarded as an excellent model intellectual actress in the entertainment world due to her multiple identities. She serves as founder of Tong Yue Culture Media Company, as well as producer and publisher of many popular Chinese TV dramas. Moreover, she is also an EMBA and MFA, graduating from the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business and Beijing Film Academy respectively.
In addition, as a mother of three children, Guan has just graduated from a CEO course at the Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance.
When asked whether a woman should sacrifice her family to pursue career development, Guan shared her successful experience. She said, "many people believe that career women should balance the relationship between their families and careers, but this is an incorrect view because everyone in the workplace has to face such dilemmas. "
Guan further explained that, "women have to give birth to a child because of their physiological characteristics, but the responsibility of taking care of children should be jointly shouldered by both men and women".
Paternity Leave Is Necessary
Guan said that she is a lucky woman because her husband could share the household affairs with her, leaving her more time for study, filming, operating her company or doing whatever she wants to do.
She also used the Swedish fathers' maternity leave policy as an example and called for men's participation in household affairs, putting forward that "policy support is a key factor to encourage men to assume their family responsibilities".
Guan's opinion was also supported by Olympic champion, Zou Shiming, who was invited as a male representative to participate in the forum.
