A former poster girl for Project Hope, one of China's most influential charity programs, has become an active giver after years' of efforts to shake off poverty and improve her own situation, media recently reported.
Su Mingjuan, 35, was a delegate to the 18th National Congress of the Communist Youth League of China (CYLC) which was held in June in Beijing.
During the gathering, she gave an interview, saying: "When I was a student, I often received donations from charity-minded people. Now, it's time for me to pay back society."
"I made my first donation to a college student who has always been hard-working and now works at a financial institution," she said.
At the end of 2017, Su was elected as part-time deputy secretary of the Anhui Provincial Committee of the CYLC.
However, being a charity campaign promoter remained her most desired career.
After repeated consideration, Su decided to establish a charitable foundation which bears her name in Anhui.
Earlier last month, the Su Mingjuan Education Foundation was officially established, aiming to provide impoverished college students with financial assistance.
Su said: "The foundation made me realize that I now have greater responsibility. I hope I will get more assistance from society to implement charity campaigns."
Su became well-known when her face was used for a series of Project Hope posters published in the early 90s that portrayed the urgent need to deal with illiteracy among children in remote villages.
In 1991, photographer Xie Hailong visited the mountainous Jinzhai County, Anhui to see how the project was doing in helping kids that had to give up their studies due to financial difficulties. A picture he snapped of Su started her path to fame as a representative.
That photo, which emphasized Su's large, innocent eyes over the slogan "I want to go to school" has touched thousands and inspired countless Chinese people to donate money to the education-based charity.
