Wang Xuemei, member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), is a professor with the Rocket Force University of Engineering (RFUE) in Xi'an, capital city of Northwest China's Shaanxi Province.

Wang will make suggestions on strengthening basic education of national defense during the third session of the 13th CPPCC National Committee.

"I was inspired by an academician's opinion on military training in local universities and colleges when I made an investigation last year. Some new students at military schools do not know much about the army before they enter the schools," said Wang.

She holds that the quality of new students in the military schools determines the quality of the talents sent to the military.

"It's necessary to strengthen basic education of national defense, so more outstanding young people can learn about the army, love military culture, and understand their mission and responsibilities on the national defense security," Wang said.

The RFUE hosted a national students' military training camp last year with more than 500 teachers and students from all over the country taking part. The camp combined military training with education on Chinese revolution, giving students a better understanding of the army. It also gave Wang more food for thought.

"We should let more people realize that protecting national security is not the task of a minority of people, but is closely related to everyone's daily life," Wang said.
