Safeguarding Ancient Arts by Building a Modern Brand

Xu Daiya, an enterprising student from the Department of Fine Art of Zhengzhou Preschool Teachers' Education College, central China's Henan Province, decorates one of her shoes with acrylic dye. The finished products, made for a fashion company in Wuyuan County, east China's Jiangxi Province, integrate elements from different traditional handicrafts such as bamboo weaving, tie-dyeing and Song Dynasty (960-1279) brocades. The techniques are a large part of the company's brand identity, which is based on distinctive cultural and regional features. [Xinhua/Song Zhenping]
