An activity of sending vehicles of the Health Express for Mothers project to poverty-stricken areas and conducting a week-long mobile medical service in poverty-stricken counties is launched at Nayong County, Bijie City, Southwest China's Guizhou Province, on October 16. [Women of China/Xie Lin]

The day before China's seventh National Poverty Relief Day, which this year fell on October 17, 10 vehicles of the Health Express for Mothers project were ready to depart to poverty-stricken areas in Bijie City, Southwest China's Guizhou Province.

A week-long mobile medical service was also launched on the same day.

At the launch ceremony, Wang Yinxiang, vice-president of the China Women's Development Foundation (CWDF) and major sponsor of the project, expressed her hope that the project will improve the diagnosis and treatment capabilities of local hospitals and medical workers, enhance local women's healthcare awareness, and improve their health.

Zhang Yihao, deputy secretary of the Bijie Municipal Party Committee, said that they will use this event as an opportunity to popularize health knowledge, so that more impoverished women and children are able to enjoy equal access to qualified medical services.

After the launch ceremony, 10 vehicles set off to grassroots-level hospitals in several counties in Bijie City.

Ren Zaijin, deputy secretary-general of the Fourth Council of the China Medical Women's Association, led experts in obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and ophthalmology from Beijing, Yunnan and Jilin provinces and other places to carry out free treatment, seminars and home visits with medical workers from local hospitals.

The expert team of the project carried out free health check and treatment in local communities.

The team also went to a primary school of Anlexi Township in Hezhang County to give eye health check and organize activities to popularize eye health knowledge.

The experts held lectures and training sessions for medical workers at the local hospitals and conducted case analyses.

The Health Express for Mothers project has been implemented by the CWDF since 2003 in 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions across the country. To date, 189 vehicles have been donated to Guizhou, and more than 19,600 impoverished women suffering from breast cancer and cervical cancer have received relief fund.
