A woman entrepreneur from East China's Shandong Province delivered 20 tonnes of dumplings, a traditional food for Chinese people in their Spring Festival celebrations, to military officers and soldiers at the front line of combating the novel coronavirus in Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak and the capital city of Central China's Hubei Province, on February 2.
Zhu Chengrong, 66, a recipient of the honorary title of the "National Most Beautiful Family" given by the All-China Women's Federation, comes from Linyi City of Shandong. She is the founder of Shandong Zhulaoda Foods Limited Corporation.
Shortly after sending Spring Festival greetings to soldiers deployed at the Weidong Outpost in Northeast China's Jilin Province, Zhu and her employees left for Wuhan with packaged dumplings, traditional Chinese snacks tangyuan (sweet dumplings made of glutinous rice flour) and wonton on February 1.
They arrived in the Huoshenshan Hospital, which was built in 10 days and serves as makeshift accommodation for virus-affected patients in Wuhan, and gave foods to the military officers and soldiers there on the morning of the next day.
In fact, Zhu has persisted in visiting and supporting the Chinese military for 19 consecutive years. She often says to others that there would have been none of her current business success but for the assistance of military soldiers in the early days of her business start-up.
According to Zhu, a traffic accident involving her vehicle, which was loaded with dumplings, happened on the way to Siping City in Jilin 19 years ago. Without any choice, she had to seek assistance from nearby military soldiers in the face of potential looting.
Apart from successfully collecting all her lost dumplings on the ground, Zhu was also invited by the military group to have a dinner and take a rest in their canteen.
Since then, Zhu has visited the military more than 300 times and sent them more than 60,000 pairs of shoes and 800 tonnes of dumplings. She has built close ties with over 5,000 soldiers.
Under Zhu's influence, her husband, daughter-in-law and granddaughter have also joined her to support the military. In addition, so far 13 other people from her family have signed up to be soldiers.
