Wei Jichen was born in a county in Liuzhou City, South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, in 1993. She returned to her hometown and became a village-stationed official in Xiatao, a village in Liuzhou, after she graduated from Zhejiang University, a prestigious school in China, with a master's degree, in July 2018.
Xiatao Village, known for its Bauhinia flower seedlings, has been lifted out of poverty by the plants industry since 2017. However, some locals still paid little attention to their children's study after they had shaken off poverty. Their children with little passion for study had poor academic performance at schools.
Wei, who has the qualification certificate for teaching students at primary, secondary and high schools, hoped to make full use of her expertise to boost the children's learning enthusiasm and inspire them to change their fate through knowledge.
At the beginning of 2019, Wei and other volunteers began to give online and offline classes to tutor the children.
Since the novel coronavirus outbreak, Wei has remained in the village, giving online classes to children of different ages and answering their questions on weekends or in evenings. Students who lack access to broadband services at home are allowed to take the online classes in an office of the village committee.
"With the development of the seedling cultivation industry, the local villagers' lives are getting better and better," she said. "I hope the children can cherish the opportunities to study and have life goals, which is the real way out of poverty."
