Before returning to work, Chang Sheng, a villager in Wujing Village, and his wife Zhu Chengzhen had a great time with their quadruplets in the village during their Spring Festival holiday. This happy family of six members once experienced a very difficult time a few years ago. In October 2013, Zhu Chengzhen gave birth to the quadruplets in Hefei, capital of Anhui Province. Before the couple could enjoy the joy of being parents for the first time, the reality gave them a hard blow. Due to premature birth, the babies were underweight and were diagnosed as mental retardation. In the following years, in order to treat the quadruplets, Chang and his wife took their children to hospitals in Hefei, Shanghai and other places, with no time to work and no source of income. Before they had children, Chang and his wife had been working outside their hometown for many years. Though they were not rich, they could save some money every year at that time. However, after the quadruplets were born, expenses on medication, rehabilitation and necessities for the children as milk powder and diapers wiped out all of the couple's savings and left them in debt. Soon, Chang Sheng's family was identified as a registered poor household. Thanks to local poverty-relief policies and social support, the couple survived the most difficult years. As their children grew up and got better in health, Chang began to go out for work, while his wife stayed at home to take care of their four children. The family got rid of poverty at the end of 2019, and the quadruplets went to primary school in September 2020. When the children are at school, Zhu Chengzhen also does piecework, such as processing components at home, to earn about 2,000 yuan (about 310 U.S. dollars) a month. "It gives us a lot of satisfaction to see the healthy growth of our children. I believe life will get better. Now that we have been lifted out of poverty, we must strive for a well-off life," said Chang Sheng. [Xinhua/Liu Junxi]
