The fourth training session aimed at enhancing the consciousness and awareness of gender neutrality among media industry professionals was held in Beijing from December 6–7.
The two-day session was attended by more than 30 media workers.
Organized by the Media Communication and Youth Development Research Center of the News and Communication Research Institute of the China Academy of Social Sciences, the session was sponsored by the Heinrich Böll Foundation and had been held three times previously.
This year's training session featured lectures, debates and group discussions, all of which focused on the deep-rooted issue of how news reports or feature articles involve or deal with gender stereotyping and confusion, gender discrimination, and the living situation of women.
The training session also focused on the topic of "Beijing +20" — a UN-initiated campaign to commemorate and revisit the Fourth World Conference on Women, for which 2015 marks the 20th anniversary — specifically focusing on the implementation of the Beijing Action Plan, which was developed at that very 1995 conference.
The session was also highlighted by the lectures made by experts Chen Mingxia and Liu Bohong. Chen Mingxia, researcher of the Law Studies Institute of the China Academy of Social Sciences and expert on marriage law studies and on family violence legislation, gave a lecture on "Social Gender and Anti–Domestic Violence Legislation." Liu Bohong — professor of the China Women's University as well as a researcher of the Women's Studies Institute of China (WSIC), a research institution renowned for its expertise on China's gender-related issues — also presented a lecture, on "The UN's Legal and Policy Framework in Promoting Social Gender Equality."
