A spokesperson from the State Council Information Office introduced a newly-released white paper on gender equality and women's development in China to reporters gathered at a press conference in Beijing on Tuesday.
Hu Kaihong, said that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the UN Fourth World Conference on Women, which was held in Beijing, and of the country adopting the basic state policy of gender equality.
Later this week, China and UN Women will jointly hold a global summit on women, which will be presided over in New York by Chinese President Xi Jinping.
At such an important time, it is meaningful for the Chinese government to issue the white paper in order to introduce progress in gender equality and women's development during the past 20 years, explain and express relevant policy proposals, enhance international understanding regarding China, further promote gender equality and women's development, and strengthen dialogue and communication between China and the world.
This is the third white paper on women's development that the Chinese government has issued, Hu added.
Based on numerous facts and figures, the paper introduces in detail policies and measures that China has introduced to promote gender equality and women's development, alongside outstanding achievements it has made, in the aspects of institutional foundation for gender equality and women's development, women and the economy, women and education, women and health, women and decision making, women and the environment, legal guarantees for gender equality and women's development, and international exchanges and cooperation in gender quality and women's development.
The white paper will be published in Chinese, English, French, Russian, German, Spanish, Arab, Japanese and other languages. The Chinese and English versions have been published by the People's Press and Foreign Languages Press respectively, and will be released in Xinhua bookstores nationwide.
Hu said the Chinese government has issued white papers since 1991, to introduce the country's principles and policies on some crucial issues as well as progress made in economics, politics, culture, society and ecological civilization construction. To date, the Chinese government has issued 96 such papers. Including a large amount of authoritative information, they have gained much attention at home and abroad, and thus have become a key window for the international community to learn more about China's basic national conditions, values, development routes, as well as domestic and foreign policies.
At the press conference, Song Xiuyan, vice-director of the National Working Committee on Children and Women under the State Council, vice-president and first member of the Secretariat of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), as well as Jiao Yang, vice-president and member of the Secretariat of the ACWF, talked about China's gender equality and women's development while answering reporters questions.
