To commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the UN Fourth World Conference on Women (FWCW), a press conference for the new book – 'Reflections and Resonance of Women﹒Sequel' was launched at the China Women's University on September 8.
Twenty years ago, hundreds of Chinese women from all walks of life gathered at the FWCW in Beijing in 1995. Some of these women recorded everything they saw and heard about the conference into a collection titled 'Reflections and Resonance of Women', which was compiled by Hong Kong-based playwright Wong Yuen-Ling.
Twenty years later, the spirit and conceptual ideas of the FWCW have taken root across the globe, including China.
In conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the FWCW, editors Liu Bohong, Xie Lihua and Wu Hua imitated what playwright Wong did to invite 87 authors to contribute articles related to the conference.
Throughout nearly two years of efforts, the organizers managed to find almost all of the authors who were involved in the compilation of the first book.
The authors include female workers, civil servants, educators, media workers, social workers, researchers, volunteers, village cadres, and migrant workers. The oldest among them is 85 years old, while the youngest are those of post-80s generation.
Every story in the book is vivid and striking. The compilation not only represents the global significance and comprehensiveness that FWCW enjoys, but also shows how the FWCW has influenced the harmony and sustainable development in Chinese society, how Chinese policies and laws could reach perfection, and how it influences people's thoughts, studies, careers, destinies and lives.
A total of over 140 women's studies scholars, social activists, students and teachers from the China Women's University attended the conference.
