Shen Yueyue, President of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), called for solid efforts in helping women shake off poverty at a meeting on poverty alleviation in Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture in Northwest China's Gansu Province on July 16. Shen stressed that the women's federations at all levels should study further and implement the guidelines of General Secretary Xi Jinping's remarks on the tough battle against poverty.
She urged the women's federations to shoulder their political responsibility in the work of helping impoverished women escape poverty and unite and lead Chinese women to contribute to the poverty alleviation and secure a decisive victory in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects.
Women's federations at all levels should assist the local governments and Party committees to motivate women to make contributions to the poverty alleviation work with greater intensity, more concrete measures and more targeted efforts, she noted.
She suggested that the federations should adhere to a problem-oriented approach in supporting local governments and Party committees to implement preferential policies of poverty alleviation.
Lin Duo, Secretary of the CPC Committee of Gansu Province and Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the Gansu Provincial People's Congress, thanked the ACWF and fellow provincial-level regions for their long-term support, adding that the province would give more attention to women’s poverty alleviation and offer a better environment for impoverished women and families to get jobs or start businesses.
Huang Xiaowei, Secretary of the Leading Party Members' Group of the ACWF and Vice-President and First Member of the Secretariat of the ACWF, reiterated the importance of promoting the ACWF's poverty-alleviation work, of adhering to the problem-oriented approach, and raising the sense of responsibility of women's federations in the poverty alleviation.
Launched by the ACWF in 2015, the program for helping women shake off poverty has offered various training programs to about 8.3 million women and set up about 7,000 women's bases in poverty-stricken counties. A total of 2,560 women's craft associations have been founded, helping more than 1.2 million impoverished women increase their income. More than 4 million women escape poverty through developing characteristic planting and husbandry and running businesses in the industries of e-commerce and/or rural tourism.
