"We have spared no effort in conducting research, with the purposes of fulfilling our mission and bringing hope to more people," Wu Beili, a CPPCC National Committee member, said on March 4, during an interview before the opening meeting of the second session of the 14th National Committee of the CPPCC.
Wu is a researcher with Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Wu and her team have focused on basic research, and on the development of new drugs.
Eleven years ago, Wu's team made progress in the research of HIV/AIDS drugs. "After the news about our progress was reported, I received many emails from patients and their families who wanted to consult about the application of our research results. That was the first time I realized people have high expectations for the work of medicine researchers," Wu said.
The process of developing new drugs is long and tough, especially during the stage of basic research. Some of Wu's colleagues spent nearly 10 years solving a single problem in their basic research.
"We have also developed new drugs for cardiovascular disease. We hope Chinese researchers will develop more drugs, with independent intellectual property, and the drugs will benefit more patients," Wu added.
