The Eighth National Women's Congress was convened, as usual, in Beijing, on August 31-September 5, 1998, with 1,300 deputies present. The theme of the gathering concerned the congress serving as link between the past and future and how the congress would carry forward the cause into the future.
Gu Xiulian, Vice-President and First Member of the Secretariat of the ACWF, issued a report entitled "Hold High the Banner of Deng Xiaoping's Theory and Unite Women from All Walks of Life to Work Hard for the Realization of China's Monumental Trans-century Goal." Goals and tasks for Chinese women's development were put forward, calling for greater accomplishments.
Chen Muhua was elected Honorary President, and Peng Peiyun was elected President.
