A sideline of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly was held on September 22 (China Standard Time), to discuss and shape the global gender equality agenda. The high-level event, co-organized by UN Women, China, Mexico, Denmark, Kenya and France, kicked off the process of the UN to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women (Beijing+30).
Huang Xiaowei, Vice-Chairperson of the National Working Committee on Children and Women under the State Council of the People's Republic of China, participated and delivered a video message.
While presenting vivid cases and detailed statistics, Huang outlined the historical achievements reached in Chinese women's development under the leadership of Chinese President Xi Jinping in the new era. She explained "we will improve the system for protecting the lawful rights and interests of women and children" was written into the Resolution of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China on Further Deepening Reform Comprehensively to Advance Chinese Modernization, which was adopted on July 18, 2024, at the third plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).
Huang noted China has always been an active advocate and staunch supporter of equality between men and women and women's development. On the journey to modernization, China hopes to work with all countries, taking Beijing+30 as an opportunity to implement the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action in a more equal, inclusive and sustainable manner. China will support women to advance at the forefront of our times in high-quality development, work with all parties to promote building a better world for women, enhance global cooperation for women's advancement, and make greater contribution to building a community with a shared future for mankind, Huang added.
Approximately 300 participants, including those from UN member states, international organizations, civil society organizations, the private sector, and youth representatives, attended the event. Sima Bahous, UN Women Executive Director, and high-level representatives from host countries of world conferences on women, delivered speeches. It was called on during the commemorative event that greater efforts to be made to turn commitments into actions, speed up implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, and advance equality between men and women as well as women's all-round development.
