Two Sessions | Deputy Leads Villagers in Achieving Prosperity

ByWang Shasha March 9, 2024

"My biggest task is to lead my fellow villagers in achieving prosperity," says Ran Hui, a deputy to the 14th National People's Congress (NPC). Ran is Party secretary of Tianshanbao, a village in Youyang Tujia and Miao Autonomous County, in Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality.

After she was elected an NPC deputy for the first time, in 2018, Ran set a goal for herself: To become a "daughter of the people," who listens to the people's voices and helps solve their problems. During last year's NPC session, her proposal called for improvements in both China's rural living environment and transportation infrastructure. Ran was delighted when her suggestions received responses from relevant departments.

Ran's proposal, during this year's NPC session, focuses on rural revitalization, transportation, and the high-quality development of regions inhabited by minority ethnic groups.

Ran has led her fellow villagers in developing rural tourism, and in building Tianshanbao into a beautiful "backyard" of Youyang's urban areas. During the past year, the village's collective economy grew fast, thanks to the development of industries with characteristics. "Industries, such as vegetable (grown in high mountains), fruit and medicinal-herb businesses, develop well in our village. Our vegetable products have even been sold to Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Many villagers have engaged in agri-entertainment, and their lives have become more prosperous," Ran says.

To give full play to women's roles in advancing rural revitalization, the All-China Women's Federation in 2018 launched the Women's Action for Rural Revitalization campaign.

Women are an important force in promoting both the modernization of agriculture and rural areas. They are not only the beneficiaries of rural revitalization, but also contributors and builders of rural revitalization.

"Women are a vital force in advancing rural revitalization. They play unique roles in fostering family ties, values and traditions, and in developing industries, with characteristics," Ran says. "They also have their advantages in improving the rural living environment and social civility. I will work harder in cultivating new farmers, and in promoting rural women's comprehensive quality."
