The forum on young women's scientific and technological collaboration, innovation, and interdisciplinary studies, a regular activity of the 2024 ZGC Forum, was held on September 1. The event was organized by Beijing Women's Federation (BWF) and undertaken by Capital Association of Women Professors (CAWP). Vice-President of the BWF Tan Hong attended and addressed the forum. He Haiyan, President of the CAWP, and Li Yanqiu, Director of CAWP's Special Committee on Women Scientific and Technological Workers, chaired the meeting. More than 150 people, including representatives of capital-based women's social organizations, women scientists and student representatives from over 80 universities and research institutes, attended the event.
"The Resolution on Further Deepening Reform Comprehensively to Advance Chinese Modernization, which was adopted at the third plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in this July, has made clear plans and arrangements over the cultivation and career development of young scientific and technological workers, providing women scientific and technological workers with a broad space in contributing their wisdom and strength in the new era," said Tan in her speech. She asked young scientific and technological workers to draw inspiration from the exemplary stories of outstanding scientists, hold lofty ideals, remain committed to the country and sci-tech innovation and integrate personal academic endeavors with the capital city's high-quality development and the building of a great country.
Chen Chunying, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), gave a thematic report on the development of nanotechnology and medical science. She talked about the integration between nanoscience and other disciplines, shared personal career development and the stories of fellow scientific and technological workers, and called on young women scientific and technological workers to always remain curious and lead a fulfilling life.
Wang Yuming, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), introduced latest research results in fluid sealing technology and shared with attendees about his achievements in poetry, photography, calligraphy and music. He encouraged young scientific and technological workers to promote the organic integration between humanistic arts and sciences, gain new strength from interest toward hard work, and remain committed to the country and sci-tech innovation.
Annie Peng Cui, Kmart Chair in Marketing at US West Virginia University, talked about the application of artificial intelligence in marketing, and the far-reaching influences brought by artificial intelligence to modern society.
The forum announced the implementation of the Women's Science and Technology Leadership Program 2024 and unveiled a list of 20 tutors as well as 20 trainees in the special program, which has been held for three consecutive years to foster outstanding scientific and technological workers, invite leading women scientists to be tutors, promote the comprehensive development of young women scientific and technological workers and enhance their all-round qualities.
Zhou Huanping, a representative tutor from Peking University, Zhou Yaoyao, a student representative from Tsinghua University, and Mark Cobden Buck, a professor at University of Science and Technology Beijing, gave their separate speeches at the forum as well.
