Cheng Ju, a deputy to the 13th National People's Congress (NPC) and secretary of the Party branch of Dashi Village in Xianning City of Central China's Hubei Province, was busy preparing health certificates for local residents, summing up experience and practices in the prevention and control of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), and planting saplings as soon as her village lifted the outbound travel restrictions recently.
There are 428 households with 1,738 residents in the village. It had been faced with rising challenges and difficulties in the prevention and control of the COVID-19 since the outbreak of the epidemic in Wuhan, capital city of Hubei Province, in late January, with 85 people coming back from Wuhan and 111 people returning from other cities.
During the early period of the outbreak, Cheng organized local Party members, members of the village's Party committee and volunteers to take the temperatures of all villagers and register their information in a bid to build a strong defensive line against the communicable virus in the village.
Cheng also became a "delivery driver" for local home-bound residents and helped them purchase daily necessities such as infant formula and medicine.
Thanks to the joint efforts of the local residents, there have been no confirmed or suspected cases in the village.
In addition to organizing the village-based workshops to accelerate production of the cotton gauze used for the manufacturing of face masks, Cheng had been extending her assistance to all farmers in the purchase of seeds and fertilizer before they resumed their agricultural production.
"The task of my work as a NPC deputy and secretary of Party branch at grassroots level is to do my utmost to serve the people and help them solve their concrete issues," said Cheng in an earlier interview.
Cheng added that she has further deepened personal understanding of the work against the COVID-19 in rural areas and that she will bring touching stories of the people around her in that work and new thoughts on rural revitalization to this year's postponed session of the NPC in a drive to encourage more people to pay their attention to rural areas, learn more about these areas and visit the countryside in the future.
