Wenchuan Earthquake Victim Dedicates to Fight Against COVID-19 in Hubei

She Sha, a nurse at the internal medicine department of the Sichuan Provincial Fourth People's Hospital, is a member of the Sichuan medical team assisting the fight against the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Central China's Hubei Province.

She was born in 1996 in Wenchuan, a county in Southwest China's Sichuan Province, which was hit by the magnitude-8 earthquake in May 2008.

At that time, She, 12, saw medical staff saving people's lives and bringing hope to the victims in despair. The locals received selfless assistance from people all over the country. At that time, she decided to become a medical worker in the future.

She began to work as a nurse in 2015 after she graduated from Sichuan Nursing Vocational College.

On Chinese New Year's Eve, the hospital recruited the first group of medical staff to assist the anti-virus fight in Wuhan, capital city of Hubei Province. She applied to join in the group immediately. However, since the first medical team was focused on nurses from the ICU (intensive care unit) and respiratory department, she wasn't selected.

On January 25, when the hospital recruited members for a second medical team, she applied again.

"With relevant training, I believe I will be competent to work on the front line in Hubei," She said, adding that she has been paying attention to the epidemic and updated news in order to prepare to give assistance in Wuhan.

She was excited to be selected to join the province's medical team on February 2. Her parents and colleagues all supported her decision.

After arriving in Wuhan, She received training at the medical staff base, and then engaged in hospital infection management and logistic work. She was responsible for protecting 126 members of the province's medical team from being infected by the virus, ensuring their safety.

Every day, she began her work at the east area of the Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University at 7 am. She checked the distribution of medicines and facilities in every inpatient area, and disinfected public areas and medical protective equipment to avoid cross infection.

Ye Man, head nurse of the east area of the hospital, was responsible for overseeing She's work. Ye was a newly-recruited nurse 12 years ago. She had volunteered to participate in the rescue work in Wenchuan, nursing the wounded in the earthquake.

"Now, Wuhan is undergoing hardship. We have received the assistance from Sichuan Province. I am deeply moved," said Ye.

Ahead of the Women's International Day, She was selected as one of the 20 female role model medical workers at the front line of the battle against the COVID-19.

"At the beginning, I was surprised. Then, I felt very happy. The honor does not belong to me, but all the members of the Sichuan medical team aiding the anti-virus fight in Hubei," She said.
