CWU Holds 9th National Computer Design Competition in Beijing
China Women's University (CWU) held the ninth National Computer Design Competition (NCDC) for higher institutes in Beijing on May 21, which was co-sponsored by the Computer Science and Technology, Computer Basics Course Teaching, and Liberal Arts Computer Basics Teaching Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education.
Zhou Yuanqing, former vice-president of Tsinghua University and former vice-minister of the Ministry of Education; and, Lu Xianghong, secretary general of the NCDC Organizing Committee and adviser of the Liberal Arts Computer Basics Teaching Advisory Board, participated in the event. Attendees also included leaders and experts from the NCDC, instructors of different teams, and some 300 students.
Liu Liqun, CWU president and deputy director of the NCDC Consultative Committee; and, Liu Zhimin, a professor at Peking University, and deputy director and secretary general of the NCDC, delivered speeches respectively at the opening ceremony, which was presided over by Deng Xifeng, a professor at Peking University and deputy secretary general of the NCDC.
On behalf of the CWU, Liu Liqun warmly welcomed the leaders and experts. She pointed out that the competition has strongly promoted the educational reform and major development in the computer domain. A large amount of students developed their innovation ability, and improved their practical skills through the competition. Close exchanges and cooperation between colleges and universities promoted the reform of knowledge hierarchy, curriculum system, teaching contents, and teaching methods in higher institutes' computer education, Liu added. She hoped that the participants could learn from each other, improve their professional skills, and jointly improve their computer level and scientific research ability.
On behalf of the NCDC Organizing Committee, Liu Zhimin sincerely thanked the CWU for its preparatory work and considerate service, thanked judges for their hard work, and thanked Sower Power Technology Company for its strong support. She hoped that the participants could perform well in the competition, and successfully arrive at the final.
Zheng Zhiyu, student representative from the University of Science and Technology Beijing, shared her own experiences and encouraged students to tackle the difficulties with full confidence, improve their professional skills, and display youthful vigor of the modern college students.
Chen Ming, a professor from the China University of Petroleum, pledged to make fair judgment, and spare no effort to serve the students on behalf of all the judges.
The competition, first started in 2008, aims to thoroughly apply the national guideline on medium and long term planning framework for education reform and development, comprehensively improve the quality of computer education, stimulate students' interest and potential in computer knowledge and skills, and develop students' innovation ability, sense of team work, and practical ability. Some 174 teams from 17 universities signed up for the competition, including Peking University, Beijing Language and Culture University, and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. Nine design works were chosen as finalists.
