CWU Holds Chinese Culture Salon
The Shandao Sinology Club and the Association of Student Societies co-organized a reading salon on October 19 on the campus of China Women's University (CWU).
The event aimed to publicize the main thoughts and accomplishments of Confucius and other schools in Pre-Qin times.
The organizers invited Li Silong, a professor from the Religious Culture Research Institute of Peking University, to make a speech on traditional Chinese culture. Chen Lijun, deputy director of CWU's Student Affairs Office, participated in the gathering.
The experts shared their understandings on the thoughts of various schools from Pre-Qin times to the early Han Dynasty. Confucianism believes that modesty brings harmony, magnanimity brings good relations, credit brings honor and diligence brings achievement.
According to Mencius theory, when honors come, a gentleman should examine his mind lest a wall of arrogance block his view.
Touching on Chinese traditional teaching methods, the participants exchanged opinions. "Xunzi, a political theorist in ancient China, once said a virtuous teacher is always strict with himself and instructs his students without prejudice" Li said, with a nod to Chinese history.
Some 100 students attended the salon. The activity not only broadened students' horizons, consolidated their understanding of Chinese traditional culture, but also provided guidance for educational methods. Organizers said the university will host a wide range of activities related to Chinese traditional culture in the future.
