 December 10, 2016

A special commending assembly was held for volunteers serving at Chairman Mao Zedong Memorial Hall on November 19 in Beijing. Some 220 volunteers from different enterprises, higher institutes and community organizations participated in the event, including 40 volunteers from China Women's University (CWU).

At the beginning of the meeting, all the participants watched a documentary about the volunteering service in 2016. Afterwards, organizers commended some Outstanding Contribution Groups and three Outstanding Units. The title of Outstanding Unit was given in recognition of CWU's voluntary services at the site.

During the summary, Gao Tongsheng, former vice-commissar of the General Armaments Department (GAD) of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), and Peng Jichao, a member of the GAD's arts studio, introduced the true story of Qian Xuesen, a Chinese rocket scientist who developed atomic and hydrogen bombs and man-made satellites.

Attendees also included Tian Yongqing, former commissar of PLA's General Staff, Zhang Chaohui, minister of the Volunteer Affairs Office at the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, Guo Xinbao, director of Beijing Municipal Guidance Center for Volunteer Services and deputy directors from the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall Administration.

CWU has provided voluntary services at the Chairman Mao Zedong Memorial Hall since 2011. Some 300 CWU students have provided their help through counseling, translation, appointment booking, and assisting the disabled, totaling more than 6,000 hours.

The volunteers incorporated CWU's motto of "Virtus, Caritas, Scientia and Cultura" into their volunteering service duties and fully displayed CWU students' presence.
