CWU Holds 7th Basic Skill Contest for Young Teachers

China Women's University (CWU) held its 7th basic skill contest for young teachers on April 7. Liu Qinghua, deputy secretary of CWU Council, and CWU Vice-President Wang Lian participated in the event, which was presided over by Hou Dianmu, director of CWU's Teaching Affairs Office.

The contest was co-organized by the Trade Union, Quality Supervision Department, Personnel Division and Modern Educational Technology Center.  

Liu delivered an opening speech on behalf of the school leaders, expressed her heartfelt congratulations to the 15 finalists and sincerely thanked the co-sponsors.
Liu pointed out that talent training is the central task of the university, as well as classroom teaching being the main channel of personnel training. 

Chinese President Xi Jinping has said ideological work in colleges should be integrated into the entire educational process, underlining the need for firm Party leadership in higher education at a two-day meeting on ideological and political work in China's universities and colleges.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks at a two-day meeting on ideological and political work in China's universities and colleges.

The contest helps to improve young teachers' professional quality and teaching skills. It is an important step for the university to improve teaching quality, optimize the structure of teaching staff and increase teaching efficiency, Liu added.

The event provided a platform for young teachers to show their advanced teaching skills, learn from each other, recognize their insufficiency and then improve from the experiences. Liu hoped that all the participants could act accordingly with President Xi's remarks, focus on classroom teaching, explore more unknown areas with great passion and cultivate more talents with national responsibility.

Ren Xiyuan, director of CWU's Personnel Division, read the scoring criteria and competition details. The participants are expected to demonstrate their basic teaching skills, teaching theory and style in 20 minutes. Some 17 judges will take into consideration teachers' teaching plans, performance and overall impressions, and give the final scores. Student representatives will select the most popular teachers during the event.

Three teachers from the School of Culture and Communication, the Department of Physical Education and the Computer Department were awarded first prize. Some 5 teachers took silver and 7 participants took third. 

The attendees came from the Higher Vocational College, the Department of Ideological and Political Education, the School of Child Development and Education, the Art School, the School of Management, Women's Studies Faculty, the Financial Department and the Law School. The most popular award went to Song Honglei and Li Li, young teachers from the Management and Computer Departments respectively.

While fully affirming the achievements of the contest, Wang emphasized that talent cultivation is the central mission of the university. It is an effective way to foster qualified teachers and improve the university's teaching level. 

Wang called on teachers to recognize their mission and responsibilities, and hoped that relevant departments could take evaluation work as an opportunity to improve classroom teaching quality. Different divisions should work together to hold instructional experience exchange meeting periodically and organize open class regularly, in order to consolidate teachers' basic skills and improve CWU's talent cultivation quality, Wang added.
