CWU Teachers Give Special Ideological and Political Lesson

Ma Ruiping, a teacher specializing in Ideological and Moral Education and Foundations of Law at China Women's University (CWU), gave a special lesson recently on a nationally watched case, where a 22-year-old man was convicted of intentional injury after he stabbed four debt collectors who humiliated him and his mother.

Li Mingshun, chairperson of CWU Council, participated in the event and led a conversation with students from CWU's Preschool Education Specialty, Applied Psychology Faculty and Broadcasting and Hosting Department.

Students shared their opinions on the case and put forward their questions. Li explained Chinese laws in detail, tried to awaken students' sense of responsibility and make them realize their duty in building a law-based society, government and nation.

Citizens should be brave enough to fight crimes and take advantage of the power of law to protect their legal rights, Li said.

Noticeably, although the law allows any citizen to act in self-defense, they must distinguish justifiable defense from excessive force in practice, Li added.

Yu Huan killed a debt collector who was threatening his mother after she failed to repay a loan. The case has both realistic and alarming implications for each member of the country. Modern students should enhance their sense of responsibility, develop their legal thinking pattern and set up a strong legal faith, Li urged. 

Confronted with complicated online public opinions, college students should learn to identify useful information, avoid prejudiced opinions and be rational, Li said.

Li added that China's judicial system is committed to improving its ability and efficiency of tackling cases and avoiding verdicts that are obviously contrary to common sense. We should firmly believe in judiciary justice and have confidence in social equality.

Li explained the law in simple terms and led students to understand key points concisely.

The class narrowed the distance between the ideological and political courses and social reality, enriched the teaching forms of ideological and political education, and educated students about law, organizers said.
