CWU Teachers Attend 24th China-UK Human Rights Dialogue

The 24th China-UK Human Rights Dialogue was held in Beijing on June 27. Li Mingshun, secretary of the Communist Party Committee at China Women's University (CWU), and Li Ying, dean of CWU's School of International Education, attended the event.

CWU delegates participated in one of the sub forums concerning issues on anti-domestic violence and led a constructive conversation with Rebecca Ingri Rogerson, chief officer of a British-based NGO named Sisters' Home, and Samantha Josephine Banting, chief executive officer of another UK NGO The Fawcett Society.

The two sides introduced their latest progress and challenges in the aspect of domestic violence prevention. Li noted that China's first anti-domestic violence law contributed to the nation's scientific and democratic legislation process. It also reflected China's open and inclusive legislation attitude.

Chinese legislators collected piles of cases, analyzed the legislative experiences of different regions at home and abroad, and created multiple systems with Chinese characteristics in preventing domestic violence.

UK experts introduced the country's history in pushing to gender equality, and its NGO's contributions and working experiences in domestic violence intervention.

Afterwards, the two sides exchanged views and reached a broad consensus on topics of domestic violence and gender equality. In addition, they jointly identified key cooperation fields for different situations.

Li and Rebecca reported the exchange outcomes to the Human Rights Dialogue and were highly appreciated by the hosts. The seminar will contribute to international anti-domestic violence legislation and provide substantial and constructive content for women's rights protection.

Both sides agreed that the dialogue was candid, practical, and conducive to enhancing understanding and handling disputes properly.

Officials in charge of diplomatic, judicial, religious, immigrant and other affairs of the two countries were present.

Under the arrangement of the Chinese side, the UK delegation for the dialogue visited Beijing Women's Prison and CWU on June 28.
