A ceremony was held on the campus of China Women's University (CWU) on May 17 to mark the opening of the Seminar on Capacity Building for Female Officials from Jamaica.
The 20-day training session was co-sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce and the CWU. Fourteen female Jamaican officials from the island country's Ministry of Education, political parties, and several universities, attended the seminar.
Ye Shuiping, director of CWU's International Cooperation Department, presided over the opening ceremony.
During the gathering, CWU vice-president Wang Jingxia warmly welcomed the attendees. Wang noted that bilateral ties and cooperation between China and Jamaica have enjoyed a stable growth over the past few years.
She continued that the training event aims to share China's achievements and experiences in promoting gender equality and women's participation in social management, strengthening protection of women and children's rights and promoting socialist democracy and the rule of law with Jamaican women, and to further boost the friendship and people-to-people exchanges amongst women from the two countries.
Apart from reviewing the sponsorship of previous training seminars for foreign officials, Wang also talked with Jamaican trainees about the CWU's history, mission, discipline-building, gender-based academic studies, and international exchanges.
Wang hoped that participants could hold more reflections and discussions amongst themselves during the training. Moreover, they should work together to promote exchanges and cooperation between the two nations in the fields of gender equality and higher education, and elevate women's education and the development of the two countries to a higher level.
For her part, Hastings Shana Gai, who comes from the University of the West Indies, expressed gratitude on behalf of other participants to the Ministry of Commerce, the CWU, and the Chinese embassy in Jamaica for their efforts in organizing the training seminar for them.
Gai said that she has already learned a little about the work and contributions made by CWU in the promotion of women's development and gender equality and the protection of women and children's rights. She then talked about the efforts made by her country to better safeguard women and children's rights, and hoped that the two countries would further strengthen their cooperation in the aspect of gender-based development.
Gai concluded her speech by noting that she would try her utmost to learn more about Chinese history and culture whilst bringing Jamaican history and culture to China.
The training event wrapped up on June 5.
