China Women's University (CWU) held a seminar on its strategic development at the university's international conference hall on Dec 28, 2018.
More than 10 renowned experts and academics were invited to the seminar to offer their views with regard to the university's characteristics, vision and future development. They exchanged ideas with university and department leaders and gave suggestions.
The seminar was chaired by Wang Jingxia, Vice-President of the CWU. In an address to the meeting, Liu Liqun, CWU's President, called on the academic community, the education sector and the public to jointly promote the university's development amid the opportunities and challenges brought by China's higher education development in the new era.
According to Liu, CWU has been boosting its soft power, with improvements already seen in the development of various disciplines, innovations made in the cultivation of top-notch innovative talents, and progress registered in faculty development. Furthermore, it has enhanced capabilities in supporting women and families in their development.
Despite these achievements, CWU still needs to experiment with new ways to boost the quality of talent cultivation and promote the development of both undergraduate education and training programs, she said. Besides, it should further explore the value of single-sex education, make full use of the university’s advantages and characteristics, enhance cooperation and exchanges of various kinds, and increase the influence of all its disciplines, she added.
She asked the experts to help pinpoint problems in the university's development and offer their advice.
The guests, including Gao Xiaohong of the Communication University of China, Director-General Yang Zhihong of the Hong Kong New Youth Energy Think Tank, and Li Ruiying of China Media Group, who is best known as the long-term anchor of CCTV's flagship news bulletin Xinwen Lianbo, discussed topics ranging from the university's roles to its ongoing reform in the fields of teaching, research and management.
The experts offered pragmatic advice on issues including high-level talent cultivation, cultivation of talent among women, education on ideals and beliefs, faculty development, student cultivation and exchanges, international cooperation and exchanges, and the establishment of non-traditional research centers.
Li Mingshun, Party secretary of CWU, praised the meeting as a milestone in the university's history that will open a new chapter in its development. He stressed that CWU should compare itself with influential women's universities in the world and higher learning institutions in China, and take into consideration its performance in servicing women's all-round development and the All-China Women's Federation, its effects on and contributions to economic and social development, and its influence on society when trying to identify its roles and become a unique first-class women's university.
The meeting was an opportunity for the university to rally support for making new accomplishments in the new era.
