CWU Hosts UNESCO Chair on Media and Gender Forum

The China Women's University (CWU) hosted the UNESCO Chair on Media and Gender Forum and the presentation of the 10th China International New Media Short Film Festival award for best female film to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the CWU on December 7, 2019.

Zhang Li, on behalf of the National Working Committee on Children and Women under the State Council, congratulated the CWU on its 70th anniversary and praised its contribution to training female talents for China's economic and social development over the past 70 years.

Zhang said that the CWU has played an important role in insisting and promoting the institutional mechanism of gender equality and women's overall development and building an advanced gender culture.

Zhang introduced the goal and requirements of the UN for promoting the integrated development of women and media. She also pointed out that gender issues are an important subject for enhancing international voices with a global perspective. She urged attendees to create a better media environment for promoting equality between men and women and women's development in an all-round way.

Zhang Xiuqin, former Ambassador of China to UNESCO and Vice-President of the China Education Association for International Exchange, introduced the cooperation and exchanges between China and UNESCO. She called on more Chinese scholars to carry out academic research related to UNESCO topics, and to communicate and exchange ideas with peers at international platforms.

Zeng Qingyi, National Project Officer of the Office of Information and Communication of UNESCO Representative Office in China, praised the important role of the UNESCO Chair on Media and Gender in creating an academic exchange platform for media and gender-related research.

She also gave the thumbs up to the women's theme short film competition unit of the China International New Media Short Film Festival, for inspiring female directors and raising social awareness of gender equality issues. She hoped that the CWU, experts and relevant departments could make joint contributions to publicizing gender equality, constructing a gender-inclusive social culture and fulfilling the UN's 2030 sustainable development agenda.

Liu Liqun, President of the CWU and host of UNESCO Chair on Media and Gender, reviewed the development of the CWU over the past 70 years. She reiterated the responsibility of the Chair on Media and Gender in promoting gender equality. She urged a focus on narrowing the gender gap through women's education and media messaging.

Six experts delivered speeches on cultural changes in China's society and promoting gender equality in the integrated media era.

Chen Changfeng, Executive Vice-President of the School of Journalism and Communication, under Tsinghua University, gives a lecture on how to use algorithmic techniques to eliminate stereotypes in the media. [China Women's University]

 

Li Benqian, President of the School of Media and Communication under Shanghai Jiao Tong University, shares his ideas on the technology of women's prosocial communication. [China Women's University]

 

Gao Jin, Editor-in-Chief of iqiyi, delivers a speech on the video entertainment consumption of female Internet users in China at the event. [China Women's University]

 

Cao Jin, Professor with School of Journalism under Fudan University, shares her ideas on new media and social gender politics. [China Women's University]

 

Long Yun, Secretary of the Party committee of the Collaborative Innovation Center under Communication University of China, gives a lecture on women in the AI integrated media era. [China Women's University]

 

Li Shu, President of the Institute of Communication Studies, under the Communication University of China, delivers a speech on news comment and women's views.  [China Women's University]

 

Qi Shujuan, Deputy Director of the Publicity Department of the All-China Women's Federation, spoke at the presentation of the award-winning films during the women's theme short film competition unit under the 10th China International New Media Short Film Festival.

The presentation included one parallel forum on the women's power in the aspect of the culture, media and science and technology communication and one parallel forum focused on gender issues and international voices. 

Organized by the CWU, the UNESCO Chair on Media and Gender Forum attracted more than 30 domestic and overseas experts as well as more than 700 students and teachers.
