Xichang, capital of Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, in Southwest China's Sichuan Province, is known for its mild climate, and for its year-round green environment. In mid-April, photos of jacaranda blossoms, in Xichang, went viral. That was no surprise! The purple blossoms against the blue sky creates a romantic landscape, which grabs the attention of people on the city's streets.
Xichang is situated in the southwestern region of Sichuan Province. Xichang's terrain and climate are similar to those in Kunming (capital of Southwest China's Yunnan Province), which is known as the "spring city" because of its balmy, year-round weather. So, Xichang is often referred to as "small spring city."
Xichang is also called China's "space city." Why? A satellite launch center is situated in Xichang. Construction of Xichang Satellite Launch Center began in 1970. The site has launched numerous geosynchronous-orbit satellites since 1984. The site has played a significant role in China's space-exploration efforts.
Xichang has a history of more than 2,100 years. During ancient times, Xichang was known as a gateway to Sichuan and Yunnan provinces. Given its geographic position, it was an important military post — and an economic and cultural center — in the border area between Sichuan and Yunnan provinces. Xichang was also an important city along the ancient southern Silk Road, along which silk, porcelain and other goods were carried, by horse caravans, through many countries in southern and southeastern Asia.
Jianchang Ancient Town, which has a history of more than 600 years, is situated in Xichang. Both the ancient town's traditional layout and construction style have distinct features. There are more than 2,400 cultural relics — including ancient buildings, tombs, stone carvings and rock paintings — in the town. Its cultural deposits and historical remains, which date back to the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1616- 1911) dynasties, are of great value. While walking along the street, visitors may feel like they have traveled back to the old days.
Purple Romance
Jacaranda is a subtropical tree native to South America. In 1994, jacaranda was introduced to Xichang. Six-hundred jacaranda trees were planted along Hangtian North Road. Now, the city has more than 50,000 jacaranda trees, along several of the primary roads, including Jianchang, Wenhui and Jiankang roads. In May 2020, the jacaranda stood out from several kinds of trees, and it was officially identified as the "city tree" of Xichang.
Every year, the jacaranda blossoms are prevalent from mid-April to early May. Morning and dusk are the ideal times to enjoy the city's picturesque scenery. Under the spring sun, the purple blossoms seem like purple clouds against the blue sky. Pedestrians, cars and buses make their way through the sea of purple blossoms. As the breeze blows, purple petals slowly fall from the trees, creating dreamy scenes straight out of fairy tales. The breathtaking scenes grab the attention of residents and tourists alike.
'Moon City'
Xichang has been known as "moon city" since ancient times. Given its low latitude, high altitude, and little amounts of cloud and fog, residents are fortunate to be able to observe a bright moon for most of the year. Especially on the 15th of each lunar month, residents usually get to observe a big, round moon, which is as bright as jade.
What is the ideal location to view the moon in the Xichang area? Many consider Qionghai Lake to be the best option. Why? Qionghai Lake, which is surrounded by mountains, is located about five kilometers southeast of downtown Xichang. Qionghai is the second-largest freshwater lake in Sichuan; as the lake is as clear and reflective as a mirror, the moon's reflection shines big and silver in the water. During ancient times, many literati wrote poems about enjoying the bright moon by the lake.
According to legend, moon fairies bathe in Qionghai Lake. On the 15th of each lunar month, the fairies arrive on earth, at night, and they bathe and play in the lake. Also according to legend, that means the moonlight in Xichang is brighter and more beautiful on those days.
The wetlands around Qionghai Lake are home to various species of wild birds, including egrets and gray cranes. With its crystal-clear waters and lush-green surroundings, the lake has become a spot popular with locals and tourists alike. The picturesque paths encircling the lake offer an immersive experience for visitors. Whether they prefer walking leisurely, observing birds, or cycling through a scenic adventure, the paths provide visitors with a unique perspective of the Xichang's charm.
Xichang offers a unique blend of stunning natural scenery, abundant cultural heritage, and modern infrastructure. There is something for everyone in this enchanting city. It is a hidden gem, and it is waiting to be discovered.
